ABOUT CTI
A new Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), centered
around high-level political commitments
and proactive implementation by governments of the Coral Triangle
area, and supported and carried forward by private sector, international agency
and civil society (NGO) partners, could provide a major contribution toward
safeguarding the region’s marine and coastal biological resources
for the sustainable growth and prosperity of current and future generations.

SENIOR OFFICIALS MEETING
In this first formal CTI planning meeting, the broad goal is to
achieve a foundation of understanding among Coral Triangle
(CT) governments regarding the basis for a Coral Triangle
Initiative and the key elements and future steps for moving the Initiative forward.
International agreements and conventions are important and have been adequately accepted. However, there is still lacking of political willingness to drive forward and further implement such agreements. WOC’09 will provide a platform where world leaders and decision makers will come together to make commitments for sustainable development of marine resources.
This
WOC consultation is intended to raise awareness among all interested stakeholder of the World Oceans
Conference (WOC) planned for May 2009 (Manado, Sulawesi), including
linkages to the CTI.
The
objective of this meeting is to raise awareness of the Coral Triangle
Initiative, and to build a sense of collective excitement,
engagement and ownership among major Coral Triangle
stakeholders for the CTI and its overall goals; and to begin a dialogue on ways major stakeholders could
contribute to the CTI.
