Voices of The Coral Triangle; Sharing Experiences and Challenges in Addressing the Impacts of Climate Change PDF Print E-mail

From early morning, Monday 11 May 2009 delegations from the six nations of Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) along with partners for development gathered in Lotus 1 Ballroom of Sintesa Peninsula Hotel, Manado, North Sulawesi. This day, they commenced knowledge and experiences sharing while promoting some inputs on how to dealt with climate change.

Meeting Agenda

There were four (4) agenda of the meeting. Firstly, sharing experiences and challenges of addressing climate change impacts, identifying areas of vulnerability, and identifying possible responses to these impacts in the Coral Triangle.

In the morning sessions, four speakers gave their presentations were Jeff Price (World Wide Fund for Nature), Allan White (The Nature Conservancy), Syamsul Maarif (Dir.Gen  Marine, Fisheries and Small Islands, MMAF) and Giuseppe DiCarlo (Conservation International).

Next agenda was consolidating and summarizing existing efforts to address climate change and adaptation in the region. The discussion followed with next topic on highlight gaps in climate change science, for example identifying areas of vulnerability, managing climate change impacts and developing adaptation responses. The fourth agenda discussed was identifying and prioritizing opportunities and needs to address climate change impacts and responses in the Coral Triangle area.

Meeting  Output

The meeting searched for some outputs that CT countries and secretariat that will consolidate experiences including perceptions, challenges and successes in responding to climate events and their impacts on tropical marine and coastal systems; summary of research and management gaps in addressing climate change; and prioritize recommendations needed to address climate change impacts in the Coral Triangle area.

The meeting took full advantage of CT country representatives as well as the management and scientific expertise that will be present at the World Oceans Conference. Marine scientists, managers and field expertise from across the CT and regional and international experts on ocean science, biodiversity and climate change attended this meeting.
